At FMS 2023, we saw a number of fun bits in the SK hynix booth. SK hynix acquired the Intel NAND storage business and created Solidigm, but it is still operating its own SSD and NAND business. At FMS we saw two new PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs and a new generation of NAND from the company.
SK hynix V9 NAND at FMS 2023
At the show, the company had its V8 NAND on display This is the company’s 238 layer NAND at 512Gb TLC.
The new SK hynix V9 NAND is a 321-layer (321L) NAND that is 1Tb TLC. This will drive even more capacity in products like SSDs.
On the show floor, the company actually had the NAND on display which is always fun.
SK hynix PS1010 and PS1030 PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs at FMS 2023
Although it has a Solidigm subsidiary for SSDs, the company also has its own SSDs including a fairly good side portfolio.
At the show, we saw the SK hynix PS1010 and PS1030 PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe SSDs. These were in both U.2 and U.3 form factors all over the show floor.
For some sense of ordering here, both of these drives are new generation PCIe Gen5 drives, but they are also still on the V7 TLC NAND, not even the V8 being shown at the show or the V9 being announced and shown.
Final Words
We do not expect a major crossover even to PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs until later in 2024 since most systems on the market today new only support PCIe Gen4. Still, it is great to see these. The idea of having 3.3M IOPS on a random read workload from a single drive is awesome. Hopefully one day we will get to review these drives as well.
